Mark Eagleheart
Iām not interested in art as a decoration ā I am not a florist. Art should inspire some sort of emotion ā anger, love, fear, hate, peace. I want to stir people." Mark Eagleheart
Raised to be ashamed of being Indian, exposed to the prejudice, the alcoholism, and the injustices that frequently plague the Indian nation, Mark coped by learning every conceivable skill he could find. At 12 years old, he went to work in a paint and body shop, learning automotive repair, welding, braising, and soldering. At 16 he started fighting fires, which he continued to do for over 22 years. While still in his teens, he learned custom lettering and sign painting. He started drawing initially out of rebellion at having to sit still in school, but he soon realized he enjoyed it and was good at it. He ultimately decided to pursue his artistic interest and went on to attend commercial art school in Oklahoma.
After graduation, Mark moved to the mountains of Colorado and opened a graphic sign shop. Along with hand-painting one of a kind logos and signs, his reputation spread quickly for painting beautiful large-scale murals on walls, buildings, water towers, and RVs for various businesses and companies.
After many successful years, he decided to sell the shop and concentrate on creating his own art. He moved to Taos, a place he had been to on and off for many years, an artist haven, a place of beautiful light, good energy, interesting and different people, creative inspiration, and some of the best live music anywhere!
Mark's focus is Native American and southwestern based themes. His work reflects the serenity and beauty of the natural world and the mysticism of his native spirituality. He works in acrylics and pastels, creating colorful landscapes, portraits, animal scenes, Indian images, and line drawings. His work has been exhibited and sold in the Santa Fe Indian Market and in select galleries and stores thoughtout the west. Other clients include both private and corporate collectors.
Mark continues to do large-scale mural projects for hotels, restaurants, RV Dealerships, businesses, community projects; as well as continuing sign work as displayed prominently in the windows of the popular western store Horse Feathers (Taos, NM). Using small image reproductions of some of his original work, Mark has created a greeting card line in response to a heavy request for his art throughout the years.
Rarely satisfied to sit still for very long, Mark has also pursued many other activities and enjoys other interests including playing guitar, re-building jeeps & trucks, skiing, being a river guide, horse and dog training and breeding, building his own home, cooking, two-stepping, and construction using his patented (pending) tee-pee design home.
Mark's grandfather gave him the name "Eagleheart", saying "This one sees through the eyes of his heart as clear as the eagle". And this is the kind of man he has become. Raised fighting more than his fair share of injustices, he has become a man of peace who helps everyone who knows him. His eyes smile with the wisdom of one who has seen it all and no longer takes much of it seriously.
